ABSTRACT
Isaiah Berlin was Professor of Social and Political Theory at Oxford. Until his death he was probably the foremost theoretician, and defender, of the liberal position in political philosophy. His writings have been widely influential. In particular, the distinction drawn in this essay between negative freedom and positive freedom has inspired much debate.
