ABSTRACT

Through the initiative process, Californians are called upon to decide the fate of many issues in each election, and the 2010 general election was no exception. One of nine issues on the ballot in that election was Proposition 19, which sought to legalize marijuana use. Despite millions being spent in support of the measure, 2 Proposition 19 was defeated by a relatively wide margin, as 4,643,592 votes were cast for it and 5,333,230 votes were cast against it, a 46.5 percent to 53.5 percent loss.
