ABSTRACT
The sanctity of the mother-infant bond has long been the cornerstone of psychoanalytic and developmental perspectives about healthy human functioning. Yet it is difficult to imagine a more precarious relationship than that of an incarcerated mother and her baby. And as ever-increasing numbers of women make their way into the correctional system while pregnant, notions about the best interest of the child and the role of mental health professionals working in these settings require closer examination.
