ABSTRACT
There are significant legal and ethical constraints on mental health professionals performing child custody evaluations, which must be carefully considered at the clinician's peril. At the national level, the most relevant ethical standards for psychologists are the Guidelines for Child Custody Evaluations in Divorce Proceedings (American Psychological Association, 1994), drafted by the Committee on Professional Practice and Standards (COPPS), while the first author was chair.
