ABSTRACT

This chapter examines some issues related to the effects of divided attention on memory, including some recent work that I have conducted on memory encoding and retrieval. Although I have been interested in the question of the relationships between attention and encoding and retrieval processes in human memory for many years, the current research stems from issues that Gus Craik and I have investigated in recent years, starting in 1992, when I spent two years at the University of Toronto. This collaboration and interaction with Gus inspired further research of my own, and I am indebted to Gus for his counsel and support.
