ABSTRACT

The technologies of distance learning (DL) are varied. They include multimedia technology such as audio video encoding and decoding algorithms, compression and decompression techniques, computer representation of sound, and the optimization of network bandwidth efficiency (Zhang & Nunamaker, 2003). DL also utilizes knowledge management technologies such as the efficient storage, manipulation, cataloguing, searching, and retrieval of explicit knowledge in knowledgebases. In addition, ways to identify, tag, and share tacit knowledge is a key component of both knowledge management and distance learning. Collaboration technologies such as electronic bulletin boards, online chat rooms, newsgroups, and groupware are often-used components of DL technologies (Alavi, Marakas, & Yoo, 2002).
