ABSTRACT

After the collapse of “real socialism” by the end of the 1980s, Marxism is no longer a topic of debate or, at best, if considered, seems to have become a passed issue. But the question arises, can a world outlook which had such a strong impact upon history leave the scene all of a sudden? In Eastern Europe, at least, Marxism, although avoided in public debate, still survives in mentalities and motivates decisions. Moreover, in the spectrum of political life in several eastern European countries, against the background of the difficulties brought about by reform, there are political parties that can hardly hide their Marxist inspiration. Therefore, neither approaching nor breaking with Marxism is possible in the absence of its thoroughgoing analysis. With this in view, this essay is an attempt to critically analyze Marxism and its perspectives.
