ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how a multimodal approach to digital technologies in the museum and gallery can offer a commentary on concepts of embodiment, time, and space, and its effect. These two modal themes are explored through an illustrative example of the use of digital technologies in the museum/gallery. More specifically, attention is paid to the potential of the use of digital technologies to shape the visitor experience through the transporting of data across sites and screens, and the temporal dimensions of how people interact in museums and galleries and online spaces. The significance of Gunther Kress’ work is sketched here as a productive starting point for a multimodal lens on digital environments and artifacts.
