ABSTRACT

We’ve learned many things from our dear friend, Gunther Kress. One is about the habits of mind of academics. All too often their focus is disinterested critique or ostensibly objective research into social phenomena. Immediately, Gunther makes a distinction which never leaves his work. “Critique is anchored to the ground of someone’s past agendas; design projects the purposes, interests and desires of the maker into the future” (Kress, 2003, p. 50). Academic work does too much critique for too much of the time. Better we do design.
