ABSTRACT
At the heart of Ofsted lies the assessment of a 20-minute delivery by a teacher in a class of children likely to number in the region of 30. This lesson is classified against a reference manual on a seven-point scale. The accumulation of numerical data arising from the observation of numerous lessons in a school is presumed to give one key indication of the quality of the school as a whole.
