ABSTRACT

Design and Technology is unique in the school curriculum. It is the one subject directly concerned with the individual’s capacity to design and make and to solve problems with the use of materials. The easiest way to define Design and Technology is by reference to Technology in the National Curriculum. Although the National Curriculum provides a useful working basis, it cannot and does not attempt to be the authoritative and complete definition of Design and Technology. National Curriculum Technology is particularly sensitive to the way issues of culture and race can be incorporated into a rigorous curriculum and also be firmly based within the educational objectives of the subject. The experience and achievement of pupils in Design and Technology is often differentiated on grounds of race and ethnicity.
