ABSTRACT
The noxious effects of racism on the self-concepts of black people have concerned social scientists at least since the 1940s. Yet few areas of investigation have yielded such genuinely baffling findings. Results yielded by one research method have contradicted results yielded by another method; and conclusions based on sound theory have contradicted conclusions based on sound research.
