ABSTRACT
The papers in this section, and the volume itself, fill a need that has existed since whites first brought blacks to this country, requiring them to both live among whites and be different from them. The need is to understand black life on its own terms, to know what variations exist in black life in this country, and to understand how these variations are related to socially significant outcomes.
