ABSTRACT

This volume presents new perspectives on the status of black child development in the United States. Our purpose, simply put, has been to redefine how black children and their families are treated in the literature. To accomplish this goal, we set the following objectives:

to study black children's development comprehensively, looking at social, emotional, and cognitive dimensions;

to explore the consequences of differing material circumstances, family characteristics, cultural patterns, and institutional settings for black child developmental outcomes;

to study the lives of black children with uncommon thoroughness and sensitivity.
