ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests that perspectives of social change will provide useful theoretical frameworks to suggest methods through which abuses related to mental health illnesses can and should be ameliorated. Mental health is the integration of psychological, emotional, and social harmony. By the same token, mental health encompasses one’s quality of life and general well-being as it pertains to thought and behavioral processes. Mental health services are organized in terms of catchment/service areas just like in Nigeria. In addition to all other suggestions, involving people with mental health conditions in employment and income generating programs to assist with poverty alleviation, improved autonomy and the decision-making process is vital. Mental health policies and laws can be an effective way of preventing human rights violations and discrimination and of promoting the autonomy and liberty of people with mental disabilities. The development and implementation of policies, plans, and laws that promote human rights for people with mental disabilities is a must.
