ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews the differences between the American and European perspectives on sustainable energy development, and evaluates specific policies in two North American countries. It also examines the impacts of national policies of northern and southern European countries on public acceptance of new, sustainable energy systems. Recommendations for improving the acceptance of sustainable energy systems by local units of government and the citizenry are offered. Finally, the impact of sustainable energy policy on national and global economies is reviewed.
