ABSTRACT

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) recognizes that small island developing states (SIDS), low-lying and coastal countries, Africa and the least developed countries (LDCs) are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change (UNFCCC 2007). Millions of people in the coastal areas of Bangladesh are under threat of climate change and climate variability issues. If sea level rise occurs at a rate higher than predicted and coastal polders are not strengthened and/or new ones built, six to eight million people will be at risk of being displaced by 2050. According to a recent report, over 35 million people will be displaced from 19 coastal districts of Bangladesh in the event of a 1-metre sea level rise this century (Rabbani 2009).
