ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with the cognitive functions involved in handling linguistic information. We shall be concerned throughout with subject coding strategies for verbal strings: with the processing stages comprising a strategy, with the nature of the encoded representation at each stage, and with the time course and the flexibility of processing. Thus, this chapter complements Chapter 4, which emphasizes the environmental influences on language behavior, rather than the underlying mental processes that generate it.
