ABSTRACT

Wait. Are you thinking ‘Teaching mathematics is not political – this chapter has nothing to do with me’? You are probably in a hurry to get to something that sounds more practical. I want to challenge the idea that teaching mathematics is not political. I don’t mean Political (capital P) – I don’t want to know who you vote for. By political, I mean that there are links between mathematics, the way society is organised and the way things get decided. Mathematics teaching can help students be aware of these links and participate in democratic debate and social action.
