ABSTRACT
This chapter is about some of the ways that teachers use examples in mathematics teaching, and aims to raise your awareness of the importance of choosing and using them with care. Contrasting but complementary approaches to examples in mathematics are explored in the chapters by Richard Barwell, Heather Mendick and Marie-Pierre Moreau, Hilary Povey, Leo Rogers and Hamsa Venkat.
