ABSTRACT
Social capital or capacity lies at the heart of community development. If citizens cannot plan and work together effectively and inclusively, then substantial proactive community progress will be limited. This chapter discusses community social capacity and how it relates to community development. Based on an extensive review of previous studies, the chapter lists and categorizes factors that affect the likelihood that community-building efforts can succeed to increase the social capacity of geographically defined communities.
