ABSTRACT

Internet searches using phrases such as “leadership development” and “effective leadership” yield tens of millions of results. Even searches using “leadership and community development” yield millions of results. Within this vast body of information, there is a myriad of definitions of leadership and recommendations on how to develop leadership skills. Much of the information

is oriented toward private sector applications, although research on effective leadership in the public sector, including communities, is growing, such as that provided by the Community Action Partnership. It is certainly not feasible in one book chapter to provide a meaningful review of this vast literature. Instead, in this chapter we will mine certain gems from the research and combine them with the authors’ experience in organizational leadership in both the public and private sectors.
