ABSTRACT
Evidence has been accumulating for some time (see Bransford & Franks, 1971, and a recent review by Jenkins, 1974) that suggests that we tend to focus on the meaning, or deep structure, of an utterance and ignore, or pay only casual attention to, its surface structure.
