ABSTRACT

The three papers in this part are very different from one another in most respects, but they do share one important attribute: All three are at the leading edge of the contemporary field of cognitive development. They say new things; they reflect novel trends. Brown and DeLoache discuss metacognitive development plus other new research topics. Case presents a new theory of cognitive growth. Chi's studies are radically and refreshingly different from most memory-development studies of the past decade. Therefore, one answer to the question, “What develops?” is well illustrated by these three papers: new theoretical and research approaches to the study of children's thinking develop.
