ABSTRACT

In this chapter Raudenbush explores the use of hierarchical linear models for the study of repeated observations. He tackles the problem that repeated observations are often nested within social contexts such as families, classrooms, schools, neighborhoods, etc. By adding a third level to the analysis, it is possible to study the effects of social contexts on individual development. Concepts are illustrated using data from the National Youth Survey. The work is expanded to include the situation in which individuals are cross-classified across social contexts. Generalization to binary data is also considered in this chapter.
