ABSTRACT

You've picked up a book about sport, animals, and society and now find yourself reading a chapter titled “The Ethics of Interspecies Sports.” What brought you to this? Perhaps you’re a big-game hunter or a small-mouth angler. Maybe you enjoy agility training with your dog, or maybe You've seen the bloody sinew of an underground fight. Maybe your thrill comes from the track. Whatever the case, I suspect that somewhere, sometime, You've had a visceral turn in your stomach that provoked what José Ortega y Gasset wryly called “an uneasy conscience” about how we use animals in and for sports (Ortega y Gasset, 2007, p. 98).
