ABSTRACT

It has been our privilege to serve as members of the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations (CREIO) largely since its inception by founders and co-chairs Dr. Cary Cherniss and Dr. Daniel Goleman. The first author was initially invited to participate in the consortium as she was serving as director of the Personnel Resources and Development Center of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which was, at the time, the largest civilian psychological research center in the federal government. OPM is the corporate human resource policy office for approximately 1.7 million federal government employees. The second author headed the federal government testing program for many years, overseeing the research in social skill assessment. Dottie Brienza and Ron Crain served as organizational consortium members representing Johnson & Johnson and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), respectively. Ms. Brienza is now with Ethicon, a Johnson & Johnson Company, and Mr. Crain is still the Human Resource Director for DFAS. Dr. Cavallo, while not a member of the EI Consortium, assisted Ms. Brienza and Matthew Mangino, the other J&J representative, with the research presented in this chapter.
