ABSTRACT

We have made great strides in gaining control over our physical world, but how much progress have we made in controlling ourselves? We have far more material comfort than our great grandfathers (Csikszentmihalyi, 1999), yet we are no happier (Myers, 1992) and we still experience surprisingly high amounts of stress, anger, anxiety, and depression (Ciarrochi, Scott, Deane, & Heaven, 2003). Humans are the only animals who kill themselves (Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson, 1999). We build weapons of mass destruction. We abuse and murder each other. Can there be any doubt that humans are a bit crazy?
