ABSTRACT

Under the direction of Academie Francaise member Philippe Contamine, the Centre Jeanne d'Arc in Orleans is preparing a reedition of volumes 4 and 5 of Jules Quicherat's Proces de Jeanne d 'Arc. This chapter presents several transcription errors we found, some of which have never before been noticed and have misled even the most recent historians of Joan of Arc and editors of texts. Some mistakes are less important than others: most will not considerably influence our conception of Joan of Arc's history, but they will serve to draw our attention to the importance of choosing the right edition. When it came to publishing the theological treatises ordered by Charles VII at Joan's examination in Poitiers and on the occasion of her rehabilitation trial, Quicherat was hindered by his political and philosophical opinions.
