ABSTRACT

For the clinician single case research has one overwhelming advantage; the material for research is the same as their clinical work. There is no need to seek out special populations, control groups and large numbers of subjects. Research can be completed within a matter of months rather than years and there is every opportunity for the investigator to build up expertise and data rapidly and sequentially. Furthermore, some single case research can be carried out relatively cheaply without the taxing need to devote time and resources to applying for and administering research grants. But single case research should not be approached casually, there are many pitfalls and difficulties. Care must be taken over the articulation of the research question, development of measures and the implementation of the interventions.
