ABSTRACT
The work task as the determinant of work motivation and satisfaction is the central topic for this chapter. The focus is on task characteristics that refer to the content of the work and the way in which work tasks are structured. First of all we will discuss the motivational implications of job design and second we will indicate to what extent scientific knowledge in this field can be useful in the design or redesign of production systems.
