ABSTRACT

Communication can be defined as the sending and receiving of messages by means of symbols. This definition covers a very broad field, at micro-, meso-, and macro-level. In the chapter that follows, the emphasis is placed on the meso-level: the organization. Following a discussion of the communication process, communication is considered as an element within the organizational climate. Research (De Witte & De Cock, 1987) has shown that the form, content, and direction of communication varies according to the type of organizational climate. The different organizational climate types will be described, together with the means of communication associated with them. We shall then support this theory with research data before presenting some conclusions.
