ABSTRACT

No coaching book can be complete without an explicit consideration of competition. Competition is why all those involved put in so much effort to prepare and train for the best performance on a particular day. Unfortunately, however, some coaches and many athletes often get so caught up in the day to day detail that they lose sight of the ‘big picture’ focus on the event itself. Accordingly, as we go through the build-up to the event, and consider coaching behaviours at the event itself, we will highlight some of the difficult areas that should be avoided.
