ABSTRACT

Fiona is the coach of a U16 girls football team; she has completed her coaching awards and considers herself to be knowledgeable about football coaching at the level at which she is operating. Certainly her coaching behaviours appear to be spontaneous and she carries out her actions in a fluid and intuitive way. Yet, when asked ‘why’ she is carrying out certain behaviours or actions, she struggles with the explanation. Often she can’t say what it is that she knows and finds herself at a loss when trying to describe why she’s doing what she’s doing.
