ABSTRACT

“Each passing year confirms one of the great events of modern times: the triumph of survivorship…. The increase in the absolute number and the relative proportion of people over the age of 65 in our nation and around the world has been an extraordinary historical phenomenon—with fundamental social, economic, cultural and personal consequences. Within our own lifetimes, the trend has been clear: marked reductions in childhood and maternal mortality and, more recently, reductions in later-life mortality.”
