ABSTRACT

Research on the use of condoms among sexually-active university students is timely. Students are recognised as being particularly at risk of infection by HIV, because they are at the age of sexual experimentation and are in constant and continuing proximity with each other (Crawford, Turtle, & Kippax, 1990). As one might expect from an educated section of the population, university students generally possess good basic knowledge on HIV/AIDS issues and the most effective ways of preventing infection. It appears, though, that this knowledge is not being acted upon (Carroll, 1988; Edgar, Freimuth, & Hammond, 1988; Turtle et al„ 1989). In the study reported in this chapter, we explored some of the reasons for this discrepancy by searching for the most important predictors of safer sex.
