ABSTRACT

My chapter title could equally well have been ‘Unfınished business’, except that this has become so over-used as to be hackneyed, and that anyway I propose to deal with questions that still remain open. When I served on Ph.D. committees at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the final question to the aspirant was usually: If we pass you, what will you do next? Were the response ‘More of the same’, or words to that effect, the committee’s collective heart would sink. To the credit of the aspirants, such a response was rarely forthcoming. It was usual for a successful dissertation to raise at least as many questions as it answered: that is to say, to point the way towards further fruitful enquiries. Loose ends were left dangling. I am encouraged by this circumstance to suppress my disappointment in what I have so far failed to do, and to suggest some directions in which future research might be directed.
