ABSTRACT

In 1898 a German-language encyclopedia of the mathematical sciences began to appear in fascicles, published under the auspices of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences. This undertaking was initiated and directed by Felix Klein, and was pursued systematically until the First World War, eventually being completed in 1935. A French edition of the work also appeared. The work has classically been considered as a striking monument to the organization of the mathematics of the period, and of the construction and reconstruction of mathematical knowledge at that time.
