ABSTRACT

The beginnings of the Israeli educational system can be traced back to several decades preceding the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. The foundations were laid by the Jewish settlement of Palestine at that time under the British Mandate government. The unique quality of the system derived from the fact that

the Israeli school, from its very beginning was not merely an institution for the transmission of knowledge and the acquisition of skills. It was at the vanguard of creating a new society and culture … was looked upon as a major vehicle for materializing both general and particularistic aspirations for the future.
