ABSTRACT
The central focus in the study of human development should be the understanding of change. It is surprising, then, how much of the intellectual energies of the field are devoted to identifying continuities or stabilities across ontogeny. As a consequence, the question that should be seen as the central one in the field has often been ignored; that is, “What are the conditions for continuity and change across life?”
