ABSTRACT

The ideology of individualism, a theory that describes the relationship between society and the individual (Meyer, Boli, & Thomas. 1981), purports to provide an organized image of the modern Western world (Buchman 1987). It conceives of individuals as capable and competent, while acknowledging their wide variety of needs. Within this framework, human development entails the cultivation of individual potentials, talents, and uniqueness leading to the achievement of individual autonomy. Individuals are socialized to become purposive, devoted, and responsible persons in a society that is modern and rational.
