ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the problem is to divide a total length L, presented as a fence around the edge of a field, into two complementary subsets. One subset is to be formed of boards, 1 BD, of identical dimensions for a given situation, and the other is formed of wires, W. The wires link the boards together according to the alternating sequence BD-W-BD-W-BD, a BD at each end. Subjects are asked whether the wires are equal and whether the whole length is covered. Three or six boards are used, but the pattern of construction is always the same.
