ABSTRACT

Work is a central focus in many peoples’ lives. It serves as their reason for education, their self-identity, their symbol of contribution in life, and the source of sustenance and even wealth. Industrial-Organizational (I/O) psychology is the study of human behavior at work. Therefore, given the centrality of work to humankind, one might expect that I/O psychology has high visibility in the world. Surprisingly, its impact on the world—both perceived and real—is rather minor. In this chapter I attempt to explain why this is the case. In the course of doing so, I present predictions for the future of our field.
