ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the interface of the science and practice of industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology in the area of predicting managerial success. Although prediction and selection represent areas in I/O psychology where science and practice have successfully interacted, the exchange has been less successful in the identification of managerial potential. This is unfortunate; both organizational leaders and scientists have labeled managerial talent a critical national resource (Campbell, Dunnette, Lawler, & Weick, 1970). In this chapter we address the science-practice interface by introducing a different theoretical perspective for understanding and predicting the realization of managerial potential.
