ABSTRACT

Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is a unique chronic illness in that its successful management depends upon the active participation and cooperation of the patient in his or her treatment program. Compliance with the diabetic regimen is necessary for avoidance of long-term complications of the disease that include blindness, kidney failure, and cardiovascular problems. Compliance, however, includes monitoring complex interactions and variations in diet, exercise, and insulin regulation. As such, compliance with a diabetes regimen requires complex information processing strategies.
