ABSTRACT

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published by the American Psychiatric Association, is considered to provide the official nomenclature for diagnosis and research. Since its introduction in 1952, it has undergone numerous changes and seen several different editions. Most recently, the American Psychiatric Association introduced its latest version— DSM-5 (American Psychiatric Association, 2013), which intended to advance clinical practice and empirical research by further improving the diagnostic criteria for mental disorders.
