ABSTRACT

My title, as soon becomes apparent, was intended to have meaning on several levels. Each of them, however, is related to the central theme of these remarks—a concern about recent developments within psychology which, although extremely salutary, carry with them as side effects threats to the integrity of psychology as a recognized discipline whose core characteristics distinguish it from other disciplines. These centrifugal forces, as they have been labeled, are most conspicuous in the rift between psychology as a science and as a profession, a widening gulf that I detail later. My initial focus, however, is on the forces of disunity within scientific psychology.
