ABSTRACT

Unexorcised remnants of the nostalgic spell cast by the Iowa Centennial Celebration have led me to devote the first part of this chapter to a personal account of the ways in which my views of emotion, frustration, and motivation were modulated by interactions with colleagues and students at Iowa. Some of the outcomes of these experiences, especially as they have affected my conceptions of operational definitions of the attribute of being motivated, are detailed in subsequent pages.
