ABSTRACT

Work-site health promotion is a developing concept in the sense that its boundaries are extending to new behavioral areas. Initial attention to the prevention of cardiovascular disorders has expanded to include a variety of physical and psychiatric disturbances. The emphasis is no longer on prevention of illness alone, but also on organizational effectiveness which is known to be impeded by stress. Occupational stress may result from job conditions, role ambiguity, and social interaction. Many behavioral problems at work stem from individual predispositions to stress. Recently, research has also concentrated on the spillover of strain produced in the family, and on the question of social support.
