Anyone who must categorize people or objects on the basis of a set of signs is engaging in a diagnostic process. For example, motor mechanics diagnose car faults, systems analysts find the flaws in computing systems, and football coaches are forever trying to find the weaknesses in their team’s defenses (especially after a loss).
